What is Fenghuang Dancong
Fenghuang Dancong is a oolong tea from Phoenix Mountain in Chaozhou, Guangdong. Its signature is "one tree, one aroma" — different individual bushes in the same garden yield distinctly different floral notes, hence "Dancong" (single bush). High-mountain gardens with mist and large day-night temperature swings produce richer, more lifted aromas.
Origin & Craft
Tea gardens range from 350m to over 1400m. Higher altitude means more tender leaves, lower bitterness and clearer sweetness. Processing includes withering, shaking (doing-green), fixating, rolling and roasting — shaking sets the aroma type, roasting sets the aftertaste and storage life.
The Ten Aromas
Dancong is named by scent: Honey Orchid, Duck Shit (Silver Flower), Yellow Zhi, Orchid, Magnolia, Osmanthus, Night Jasmine, Jasmine, Pomelo Flower, Ginger Flower. Aromas come from cultivar and craft, never added flavoring.
How to Choose
- Beginners: Honey Orchid or Duck Shit — approachable, popular scents
- Sensitive to bitterness: high-mountain spring tea, half the leaf, 90–95℃ water
- Gifting: well-known aromas in refined packaging
- Storage: sealed tins, cool and dark
Brewing
Use a 100–150ml gaiwan, 5–8g leaf, 95℃ water, quick pours for the first two steeps then lengthen. Dancong resteeps 8–10 times, turning honey-sweet at the end.
